Causes of secondary infertility-
Fertility declines with age. Women who had no trouble getting pregnant with their first child may struggle to conceive the second time around when they are older and less fertile.
Endometriosis is a chronic progressive disease, so while it may have not interfered with prior pregnancy, it may have progressed and is interfering now.
Gynaecological or abdominal surgeries, such as a caesarean delivery can lead to scarring which can interfere with natural conception.
Thyroid disease, PCOS and autoimmune conditions can throw hormones off balance.
STIs can occur at any age and cause infertility due to inflammation and scarring.
Abnormalities in sperm parameters can lead to a difficulty in conceiving the second time around.
Dealing with Secondary Infertility-
If you have had one or more pregnancies and no previous fertility issues, but are unable to conceive naturally after 12 months of trying (6 months for women over 35), you need to see your physician. You and your partner should be evaluated by your doctor.
A complete fertility evaluation helps determine the cause and makes it easy to move forward with the appropriate treatment.
Secondary infertility is treatable, and many women go on to have successful subsequent pregnancies. There are various treatment options based on the woman’s specific fertility profile, including IUI and IVF/ICSI.
